First Generation

1. John1 Young, son of John Young, was born in Virginia about 1805.(1) John died about 1858 in Denton County, Texas.(2) John's exact date of death is not known, but the year was estimated from Denton County tax rolls. Taxes were paid at the end of each year, and John paid the 1857 taxes, but his wife Rhoda paid the 1858 and subsequent taxes. John does not appear on any records after 1857.

He married Rhoda Owens in Wayne County, Kentucky, July 11, 1822.(3) Surety was put up by Hopson Owens and the marriage was officiated by John Stephenson. Rhoda was born in Virginia about 1805.(4) Rhoda was the daughter of Arthur Owens and --?-- --?--. Rhoda died October 22, 1872 in Denton County, Texas, at 67 years of age.(5)

John Young and Rhoda Owens had the following family:

Second Generation

2. Nancy2 Young (John1) was born in Wayne County, Kentucky about 1825.

She married William Burden in Ozark County, Missouri, about 1844. William was born in Tennessee about 1820. William died 1855 in Denton County, Texas, at 35 years of age.(8) William died between the time 1854 and 1855 taxes were paid. On the 1855 tax roll, his wife is listed and he is listed as deceased.

4. Samuel2 Young (John1) was born in Wayne County, Kentucky September 18, 1828.(9) There are many conflicting dates for Sam's birth, but the only date which came directly from Sam is the one he gives on his pension application. Samuel died October 28, 1913 in Jack County, Texas, at 85 years of age.(10) His body was interred in Jack County, Texas, at Trinity Cemetery.(11) Sam's obituary and the Conkling's Butterfield Overland Mail list the cemetery as Live Oak. All modern references refer to the cemetery as Trinity or West Fork of the Trinity. A reference in the November 13, 1913 issue of the Jacksboro Gazette calls it the Trinity Cemetery in the Live Oak School District. The birth date on Sam's tombstone conflicts with the obituary and his pension application.

He married three times. He married Elizabeth --?-- about 1864.(12) It is unknown where Sam and Elizabeth actually married. Since their first daughter, Fannie, was born in Louisiana, between 1864 and 1865, it makes it more plausible that Sam was on detached service from his unit in Shreveport working as a wheelwright or blacksmith. Such stationary duty would make it more likely he would marry while still in the service. And if Fannie was born there in 1865, it also supports his pension file that he served until the war's end, though he was listed as absent from his unit. Elizabeth was born in Alabama about 1830. Elizabeth died about 1873 in Texas.

He married Nancy Adeline Nix in Texas, about 1873.(13) In 1870, Nancy's brother was living in Denton County.

Mrs. Maria Young, formerly of Jack County but now of Throckmorton County, was buried at Trinity Cemetery of last week. Mrs. Young was well known among the older people of Vineyard, Cundiff and other communities east of Jacksboro. She was born in Tennessee in 1853 and moved to Texas while young. On a visit to the cemetery in 1991, Glenn R. Young noted a grass fire had destroyed most of the wooden markers. The cemetery is south of Caney off a dirt road. It is small and difficult to locate.
