First Generation

1. George Christian Frederick¹ Margretz was born in Berlin, Prussia December 30, 1786.⁽¹⁾ George died February 5, 1834 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at 47 years of age.⁽²⁾ His body was interred in West Beaver Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at St. John's Cemetery.⁽³⁾

He married Charlotte Reichengroin in Prussia, circa 1812. Charlotte was born in Stettin, Prussia 1790.⁽⁴⁾ Charlotte died after 1850 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.

George Christian Frederick Margretz and Charlotte Reichengroin had the following family:

• 2 i. Albertina² Margretz.

• 3 ii. Charles Margretz was born in Prussia 1813.⁽⁵⁾ Metzger cites his name as Carl. The passenger list gives his name as Charles.

• 9 viii. Infant Margretz was born in Snyder County, Pennsylvania November 28, 1831.⁽⁷⁾ Infant died November 1831 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at less than one year of age.⁽⁸⁾ She only lived a few days. Her body was interred in West Beaver Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at St. John's Cemetery.⁽⁹⁾

 

Second Generation

5. Herman Henry² Margretz (George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Prussia March 7, 1816. Some family stores say was born aboard the ship coming to the United States. Passenger lists indicate he was five years old when he arrived in the U.S. Herman died December 17, 1864 in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee, at 48 years of age.⁽¹⁰⁾ He died from a gun shot wound to the head on the battlefield.

An account of his death was written in a report by his commander, Colonel Datus E. Coon :

"December 17, moved at daylight and continued the pursuit, following in the rear of the cavalry commanded to Franklin, where I was ordered to move to the left on the Lewisburg Pike three miles and cross over to the Columbia Pike. When three miles south of Franklin we met the enemy, and I immediately formed the whole brigade and charged mounted. On reaching and driving the rebels' left the Second Iowa pressed its way around to their rear, when a hand-to-hand fight ensued, resulting in the capture of one stand of colors and several prisoners. In this engagement Sergt. John Coulter, Corpl. A.R. Heck, and Private Black, of Company K, captured and brought off a stand of division colors, after which Private Black and Corpl. A.R. Heck were killed and Sergt. John Coulter was severely wounded. The sergeant, however, succeeded in bringing away the rebel standard. Sergeant Margaretz, of Company F, same regiment, the second color-sergeant, was killed at the same place, but not until he had killed the rebel who demanded his colors. On burying the dead, three Federal and five Confederate soldiers were found dead within three paces of each other.

He married Sarah M. Stumpff in Union County, Pennsylvania, August 11, 1835. She was married in the home of her father, John Stumpff. Sarah was born in Pennsylvania September 17, 1815.⁽¹¹⁾ Sarah was the daughter of John Stumpff and Magdalena Ritter. Sarah died June 29, 1887 in Butler County, Iowa, at 71 years of age. Her body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Butler Center Cemetery.

Herman Henry Margretz and Sarah M. Stumpff had the following family:

• 14 v. Charles Henry Margretz was born in Pennsylvania September 23, 1841. Charles died July 18, 1857 in Butler County, Iowa, at 15 years of age. His body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Butler Center Cemetery. He is buried in Lot 104, along with his mother and some members of the Ressler family.

• 15 vi. John Hiram Margretz was born in Pennsylvania August 23, 1843.⁽¹²⁾ John died after 1891.

• 16 vii. Malinda Margretz was born in Pennsylvania January 18, 1845. Malinda died before 1850 in Pennsylvania.

6. Edward A.² Margretz (George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Pennsylvania 1822.⁽¹³⁾ Edward died between 1880 and 1900 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, at 58 years of age.⁽¹⁴⁾

He married twice. He married Mary M. --?-- in Union County, Pennsylvania, about 1844. Mary was born in Pennsylvania September 13, 1821.⁽¹⁵⁾ Mary died December 17, 1862 in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, at 41 years of age. Her body was interred in Fayette Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania, at Lost Creek Presb. Churchyard. He married Jane --?-- in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, between 1862 and 1870. Jane was born in Pennsylvania December 1829.

Edward A. Margretz and Mary M. --?-- had the following family:

7. John Robert² Margritz (George Christian Frederick¹ Margretz) was born in Union County, Pennsylvania June 4, 1827.⁽¹⁷⁾ John died December 3, 1901 in Dodge County, Nebraska, at 74 years of age.⁽¹⁸⁾

He married Eve Catherine Bobb in Union County, Pennsylvania, November 25, 1846.⁽¹⁹⁾ Eve was born in Union County, Pennsylvania September 16, 1825.⁽²⁰⁾ Eve was the daughter of John Conrad Bobb. Eve died August 14, 1881 in Damascus, Stephenson County, Illnois, at 55 years of age.⁽²¹⁾

Sophia died October 31, 1855 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at 1 year of age.⁽²²⁾ She lived to be 1 year and 11 days old. Her body was interred in West Beaver Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, at St. John's Cemetery.⁽²³⁾

8. Amelia² Margritz (George Christian Frederick¹ Margretz) was born in Pennsylvania 1829.⁽²⁴⁾ Amelia died 1905 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, at 76 years of age. Her body was interred in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, at Old Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

She married Charles Perry Ramsey. Perry was born in Pennsylvania 1826.⁽²⁵⁾ Perry was the son of Charles Ramsey and Catherine Crisman. Perry died 1888 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, at 62 years of age. His body was interred in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, at Old Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Amelia Margritz and Charles Perry Ramsey had the following family:

10. Albertina³ Margretz (Herman Henry², George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Pennsylvania March 17, 1836.⁽²⁹⁾ Albertina died November 11, 1894 in Butler County, Iowa, at 58 years of age. Her body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

She married Amos Ressler in Pennsylvania, July 1854.⁽³⁰⁾ Amos was born in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania November 5, 1828.⁽³¹⁾ Amos was the son of Jacob Ressler and Ester Hetty Rhoads. Amos died February 18, 1919 in Butler County, Iowa, at 90 years of age. His body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

Albertina Margretz and Amos Ressler had the following family:

• 35 ii. John H. Ressler was born in Butler County, Iowa September 18, 1857. John died September 21, 1861 at 4 years of age. He died from diptheria. His body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Butler Co. Cemetery.

• 36 iii. Hettie S. Ressler was born in Butler County, Iowa September 20, 1858. Hettie died September 5, 1860 in Butler County, Iowa, at 1 year of age. She died from diptheria. Her body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Butler Center Cemetery. She is buried in Lot #104 along with her grandmother.

• + 38 v. Emma C. Ressler was born July 13, 1862.

• 39 vi. Mary Jennie Ressler was born in Butler County, Iowa January 21, 1864. Jennie died April 24, 1887 in Butler County, Iowa, at 23 years of age. Died of consumption. She was also blind. Her body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

• 41 viii. Ellen S. Ressler was born in Butler County, Iowa June 30, 1868. Ellen died September 5, 1891 at 23 years of age.

• 42 ix. Fred A. Ressler was born in Butler County, Iowa April 15, 1871. Fred died April 14, 1939 at 67 years of age. His body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery. He married twice. He married Sarah J. Ross April 24, 1894. Sarah was born June 10, 1870. Sarah died January 18, 1929 at 58 years of age. Her body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery. He married Anna Rossenberg December 5, 1931. Anna was born March 4, 1876. Anna died July 12, 1948 at 72 years of age. Her body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

12. Jeremiah S.³ Margretz (Herman Henry², George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Union County, Pennsylvania September 29, 1838.⁽³²⁾ Jeremiah died June 3, 1904 in Butler Center, Butler County, Iowa, at 65 years of age. His body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Hitesville Cemetery.

He married Mary Elizabeth Dunson in Allison, Butler Co, IA, December 5, 1869.⁽³³⁾ Mary was born in Shelby County, Ohio September 11, 1850.⁽³⁴⁾ Mary died March 11, 1903 in Butler County, Iowa, at 52 years of age. Her body was interred in Butler County, Iowa, at Hitesville Cemetery.

Jeremiah S. Margretz and Mary Elizabeth Dunson had the following family:

  Mrs. George L. Babcock of Absarokee Passes in Billings

  Billings, Dec. 26 - Funeral services are to be held here Wednesday for Mrs. Lottie Babcock, 67, wife of George L. Babcock of Absarokee [Stillwater County], who died here Sunday.

  Mrs. Babcock was born Lottie Margretz in Hitesville, Iowa. She was married there in 1899. The family came to Absarokee in 1936.

  Her husband, one sister, and two brothers survive.

  Her body was interred December 27, 1944 in Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana, at Mountview Cemetery.⁽³⁸⁾ She married George L. Babcock in Hitesville, Butler County, Iowa, 1899.⁽³⁹⁾

  George was born in Floyd County, Iowa 1866. George died January 30, 1949 in Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana, at 82 years of age. His body was interred February 1, 1949 in Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana, at Mountview Cemetery.

17. Nancy Jane³ Margretz (Herman Henry², George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Snyder County, Pennsylvania March 20, 1846.⁽⁴⁰⁾ Nancy died February 12, 1906 in Butler County, Iowa, at 59 years of age.⁽⁴¹⁾ She died from gangrine of the left foot, a complication from her chronic diabetes. Her body was interred Feburary 14, 1906 in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.⁽⁴²⁾

She married John B. Ressler in Allison, Butler Co, IA, January 11, 1863.⁽⁴³⁾ John was born in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania January 25, 1838. John was the son of Jacob Ressler and Ester Hetty Rhoads. John died January 29, 1920 in Butler County, Iowa, at 82 years of age. His body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

Nancy Jane Margretz and John B. Ressler had the following family:

His body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery. He married Martha Jane Soash in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, October 23, 1887. The marriage did not produce any children.

  Jennie was born September 10, 1861. Jennie died February 23, 1948 at 86 years of age. Her body was interred in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, at Riverside Cemetery.

She married John Wilson Kimmel in Butler Center, Butler County, Iowa, December 25, 1870.⁽⁴⁷⁾ John was born in Hardin County, Ohio September 15, 1850. John died January 2, 1928 in Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado, at 77 years of age.

Emelia M. Margretz and John Wilson Kimmel had the following family:

21. Adeline R.³ Margretz (Edward A.², George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Pennsylvania July 1846.⁽⁴⁸⁾

She married Jacob Sieber in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, about 1865.⁽⁴⁹⁾ Jacob was born in Juniata County, Pennsylvania June 27, 1845.⁽⁵⁰⁾ Jacob was the son of Abraham Sieber and Veronica Witmer. Jacob died October 22, 1906 in Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania, at 61 years of age.⁽⁵¹⁾

His body was interred October 24, 1906 in Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania.⁽⁵²⁾

He married Dorothy Elizabeth Dahl in Stephenson County, Illinois, July 30, 1871.⁽⁶⁴⁾ Dorothy was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany December 20, 1853.⁽⁶⁵⁾ Dorothy was the daughter of Martin F. Dahl and Anna M. --?--. Dorothy died January 20, 1939 in Dodge County, Nebraska, at 85 years of age.⁽⁶⁶⁾ Her body was interred in Dodge County, Nebraska, at Scribner Cemetery.

26. William Henry³ Margritz (John Robert², George Christian Frederick¹ Margretz) was born in Snyder County, Pennsylvania September 16, 1851.⁽⁷⁴⁾ William died January 10, 1934 in Dodge County, Nebraska, at 82 years of age. His body was interred in Fremont, Dodge County, Nebraska, at Ridge Cemetery.

  Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Vogel funeral home for Cecil Margaretz, age thirty-nine, who died Thursday evening at 10:55 o'clock at the Lutheran hospital at Hampton from a self-inflicted would he suffered earlier in the day.

  Cecil Margretz was born to Lloyd and Annie Bohnn Margaretz, October 19, 1914 in Dumont, and was marred to Dena Wildeboer, February 18, 1939, and he always lived in Dumont.

  He is survived by his wife, Dena, one brother, Leon Margaretz, of Los Angeles, California, who could not be located.

  He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Margaretz, and one brother. Burial was in the Hitesville cemetery beside his parents.

  His body was interred April 4, 1954 in Hitesville, Butler County, Iowa, at Hitesville Cemetery.⁽¹⁰¹⁾ He married Dena Wildeboer in Butler County, Iowa, February 18, 1939.⁽¹⁰²⁾

52. Herman Jacob⁴ Ressler (Nancy Jane³ Margretz, Herman Henry², George Christian Frederick¹) was born in Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa February 2, 1867. Herman died November 30, 1960 in Sparrow's Point, Baltimore County, Maryland, at 93 years of age. He died at the home of his daughter, Jura (Ressler) Lewis, 7317 North Dakota Avenue, from a stroke. He had bent over to light the stove in the kitchen when he had the stroke, hitting his head on the stove. He died a few days later. Two of his grandsons, Edward and Norman Lewis, drove from Texas to Baltimore in 24 hours. His body was interred December 3, 1960 in Baltimore, Maryland, at Oak Lawn Cemetery.⁽¹⁰⁸⁾

  RAVENNA -- Arlone Margritz, 71, of Ravenna died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at Richard H. Young Hospital in Kearney.

  Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna. The Rev. Mark Cadenbach will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna.

  Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

  Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center.

  Mrs. Margritz was born on July 15, 1927, in Hazard to Fred and Beatrice (Zimmer) Rasmussen. She was educated in Hazard and was a graduate of Hazard High School.
